Hebrews 13:20-21

Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

1.0 The Honour Glory of God

John 15:10-11: If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

2.0 The Human Failure

2 Corinthians 3:18: "And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another."

Romans 1:19-21 ESV

For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

21 For although they knew God, they did not honour him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

3.0 How Can We Honour God?

3.1 Being the Proper Human

3.2 Doing Good Works

Matthew 3:8: Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.

Eph 2:10: For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works…

3.3 Proclaiming the Gospel

John 15:5: I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 

Fruitfulness is the natural consequence of rootedness.

1 Peter 2:9: But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Habakkuk 2:14: For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.

2 Corinthians 4:4–6: the god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

3.4 Suffering and Perseverance

Reactions to Suffering

a. Negative: Bitterness, Anger, Doubt, Hatred, Revenge, etc

Ruth 1:20-21: Don't call me Naomi. Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter. I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty.

Matthew 11:2–3: Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?

b. Neutral: Stoic Tolerance

c. Positive: Rejoicing

A person who clings to God in rejoicing during suffering is acknowledging that God is of incomparable worth and no earthly loss of comfort can outweigh the gain of knowing and being known by God.
