The Prayer of Jesus

One of the most encouraging things is that, as we pray to God, Jesus is also praying for us.

The Prayer of Jesus

1.0 Inactive Peter (Reasons for failure)

1.1 Self-confidence

Luke 22:33 But he said to Him, “Lord, with You I am ready to go both to prison and to death!”

Galatians 6:14 But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

Philippians 3:8-11 I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ,

and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,

10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;

11 in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.

1.2 did not take the warning seriously

Matthew 26:35 Peter said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.”

Proverbs 29:1 A man who hardens his neck after much reproof Will suddenly be broken beyond remedy.

1.3 Failed to watch and pray

Matthew 26.41,43,45. 41 Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

43 Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

45 Then He came to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.

2.0 Proactive Jesus / The prayer of Jesus

2.1 Did not stop Satan from sifting but offered to strengthen Peter from succumbing.

II Corinthians 12:7 Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me—to keep me from exalting myself!

2.2 Prays for us.

His prayers:

*Intercession – before we sin – John 17:15, 17:24; Hebrews 7:25

*Advocacy – after we sin – I John 2:1; Romans 8:34

2.3 Why didn’t Jesus’ prayer work?

Luke 22.61,62: The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, “Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.

Isaiah 42.3 a bruised reed he will not break and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.
