Experiencing the inner peace of God in any circumstance.

Luke 1:79 To guide our feet into the way of peace.”
Isaiah 26:3 You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. (ESV)

What is peace?
Websters – a state of tranquility or quiet and harmony between people; freedom from disturbance
The usual definition includes a negative description – the absence of disturbance.

What causes a disturbance in peace? A change or potential change in a desirable calm state of existence.

1.0 The Progression of Peace

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.

a. Spiritual peace – Colossians 1:20.
b. Personal peace – John 14:27; 16:33; Philippians 4:7
c. Societal peace – Ephesians 2:14–17; Colossians 3:15.

Spiritual Peace -> Personal Peace -> Societal Peace.

a. Adam hid himself – disturbance of spiritual peace. Genesis 3:8 They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God.
b. Adam was afraid – disturbance of personal peace. Genesis 3:9 Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 He said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid
c. Cain killed Abel – disturbance of societal peace. Genesis 4:8 Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.

2.0 The Perfection of Peace

Isaiah 26:3 You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you… (ESV)

Why is human peace imperfect?
1. We don’t know the state of peace.
2. Because the order of peace is skewed.

3.0 The Personality of Peace

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.

3.1 Worry/Anxiety
Phil 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

3.2. Fear:
2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.

4.0 The Pathway to Peace

4.1 Spiritual peace is the first step.
Colossians 1:19-20 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
John 16:33 “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”

4.2. Perspective of the Eternal
2 Corinthians 4:16-17 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

Matthew 10:28 Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul…

4.3. Trust and dependence on God
Isaiah 26:3 You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. (ESV)

Three statements as the basis for us to trust God more.
God is sovereign and all-powerful.
Psalm 115:3 But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.
Job 42:2 “I know that You can do all things, And that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.
God is love. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.
God is for us. Romans 8:31 If God is for us, who is against us?

Features of a great gift:

Ephesians 1:4 He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.

Philippians 4:16 for even in Thessalonica you sent a gift more than once for my needs.
Ephesians 2:8: For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Genesis 3:1-8

3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?”

2:16 The LORD God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”

3:2 The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat;

1. Satan attacks the Freedom of life in God. 3:1
2. Satan denies the Penalty of sin. 3:4.
3. Satan questions Motives of God. 3:5.

Genesis 3:6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.

They believed:
1. The Freedom Lie
2. The Penalty Lie
Romans 6:23 wages of sin is death.
Ezekiel 18:20 The person who sins will die.
3. The Motive Lie

Genesis 3:7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.

Genesis 3:21 The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.

Hebrews 9:22 … without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

Hebrews 10:4: it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

At the cross:
1. Freedom
Romans 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 5:1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
2. Penalty of Sin:
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
3. Love of God:
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
