The Seamless Tunic

John 19:23-24 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece.
24 So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be”; this was to fulfill the Scripture: “They divided my outer garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.”

What is shame?
It is an uncomfortable feeling of intense humiliation caused by an awareness of wrongdoing, hurt ego, or guilt.

1. Kinds of shame

    a. Shame of ________________

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

    b. Shame of ________________

Hosea 4:7 The more they multiplied, the more they sinned against Me; I will change their glory into shame.
Ezra 9:6 and I said, “O my God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift up my face to You, my God, for our iniquities have risen above our heads and our guilt has grown even to the heavens.
2 Corinthians 7:9 I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to the point of repentance…

    c. Shame of _________________

2. Responses to Shame
a. Proper response
Jeremiah 6:15 “Were they ashamed because of the abomination they have done? They were not even ashamed at all; They did not even know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; At the time that I punish them, They shall be cast down,” says the Lord.

b. Improper response

Guilt vs Shame

Guilt – Romans 7:19 For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want.
Shame – Romans 7:24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?

3. The Remedy for Shame:: The Cross
Jesus Christ bore shame:
a. Philippians 2:5-8:
5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,
6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,
7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.
8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,

b. 2 Corinthians 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

c. John 19:23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece.

1 Corinthians 1:23 but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness.

Hebrews 12:2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

The Uncenter of Ambition

Some of our prayers are spontaneous, some are (almost) sacrilegious, some are sophomoric, some are spiritual and some are systematic. What if you could ask God a well thought-out request? What would that look like?  This sermon examines the conniving requests of two-thirds of the inner circle of Jesus.

The Uncenter of Ambition
Mark 10:35-45

1. The Ambition __________________
35 James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, came up to Jesus, saying, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.”
36 And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?”
37 They said to Him, “Grant that we may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory.”
Psalm 110:1 The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”

2. The Ambition _______________
38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?”
Mark 14:36 And He was saying, “Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will.”
Luke 12:50 But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!
39 They said to Him, “We are able.”
And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized.
40 But to sit on My right or on My left, this is not Mine to give; but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

3. The Ambition ___________________
41 Hearing this, the ten began to feel indignant with James and John.
42 Calling them to Himself, Jesus said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great men exercise authority over them.
43 But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant;
44 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all.

Kingdom of the world: ___________ and ______________
Kingdom of Heaven: ____________ and _____________

45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

a. ______________ by God
John 5:19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.

b. For the _________________.
45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Luke 19:10: For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

c. __________________: in his life
‘did not come to be served, but to serve’ ”

d. _________________: through his death
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

The Prayer Against

Whenever there is a tragedy today, one of the rallying calls is for prayers for the victims of the tragedy. So we see prayer for Paris, prayer for Orlando, prayer for whatever with its various hashtags and links. However, I think that we are called not only to pray for something but also against something else. Just as we pray for good, it is equally important to pray against evil.

In the Christian study on spiritual warfare, the whole premise is not built on fighting for something but rather on fighting against something – precisely, evil. (Ephesians chapter 6).

It is extremely important to pray for good – for people to follow that which is good, for people to follow God and obey him. At the same time it is also important to pray against evil, against evil doers in particular. It is especially critical when it comes to evildoers that have control or influence over many others.

In this light in recent times, I have prayed against specific people that are major influencers in the world today and are unapologetic perpetrators of evil.
Therefore, specific prayers can be prayed against the evil empire ISIS, against its leaders and beheaders in particular, against Syria president Bashar al-Assad, Hungarian financier George Soros that has for decades pushed his evil agenda on world powers, Planned Parenthood and its murder of millions of defenseless unborn under the guise of women’s health etc.

We can also pray for specific policies that are more evil in design even though it may originate from people that are not necessarily evil. And example of this class may be Vladimir Putin and his policy of global expansion by annexation.

Another category would be anyone who is in direct opposition to the Christian faith and message. For example, Indian president Narendra Modi and his clandestine overtures to persecute Christians and the related Hindu fascism in India, persecution of Christians in Communist North Korea and China and the Islamic Middle East.

The prayer for good is important, the prayer against evil is a necessary complement.

A Leather Sign

A cursory observation of human life reveals that sin has pervaded it. It is a problem that a mere change in cuisine, healthcare, social status or presidency cannot fix. Human depravity had a definite origin. This sermon explores the details of that origin and consider the solution that has been offered.

A Leather Sign

Genesis 3:1-8

Charcoal Confessions

Luke 14:26-27 If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. 27 Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.

1. All of Mine

Job 1:20 Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped.21 He said,… The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.” 22 Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God.

Genesis 22

1. Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 He said, “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.” 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 On the third day Abraham raised his eyes and saw the place from a distance. 5 Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go over there; and we will worship and return to you.” 6 Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son, and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together. 7 Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” 8 Abraham said, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together. 9 Then they came to the place of which God had told him; and Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood, and bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12 He said, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” 13 Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son. 14 Abraham called the name of that place The LORD Will Provide, as it is said to this day, “In the mount of the LORD it will be provided.” 15 Then the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven, 16 and said, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”

2. All of Me

Luke 14:26-27 “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. 27 Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.

Job 2:10 But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

John 21:15-17 15 So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” 16 He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.” He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Tend My sheep.

Worship

What is worship? How can one truly worship? How is it different than praise and prayer? These questions are answered in this session.

Worship

What happens in Worship?

Ezekiel 44:15 But the Levitical priests, the sons of Zadok, who kept charge of My sanctuary when the sons of Israel went astray from Me, shall come near to Me to minister to Me; and they shall stand before Me to offer Me the fat and the blood,” declares the Lord God.
